Theo ist da! Und das neue Leben an Bord.

Dear Readers,

at the 19. September 2019 um kurz nach 19 Uhr erblickte unser Theo das Licht der Welt. Die Geburt war nicht ganz undramatisch … Aber Mutter und Kind geht es mittlerweile wieder super. And the response to the message posted on Facebook has shown us, that you readers were also very happy for us. About 1100 We got likes on the post! So far the bar was somewhere 650 Likes 😉

The adjustment period with our little Theo was great. But unfortunately much too short. After just over a week I had to make my way back to the coast, to transfer our catamaran from the Oste to the port of Hamburg. Because on 1. My new job should start in October, as editor at Boats Magazine. And we want to continue living on board.

I've been looking forward to my new job for months. Clear, life under the palm trees also had its charm … The surroundings were fantastically beautiful, but it was often backbreaking work. Constantly guests on board, only 20 Hours between tours and throughout the year 8 Virtually no privacy for months at a time. Always worry about that, something breaks and we have to cancel a tour.

And I've been wanting to work creatively for a long time. research articles, go on a business trip, try a new ship, meet people, taking photos, film and then to formulate my experiences in an article. Above all, I think it's great, that with the new job I am now also moving to a new department, of “Panorama” to "Test & Technology". I also really enjoyed writing portraits of people and territories, but it's also nice to develop. My new department is not only about testing boats and equipment, but also to pass on technical contexts in an understandable way. And that makes me happy.

So last Saturday I brought our "Maverick" with my father to the port of Hamburg and then spent another two days in Wolfsburg with Cati and Theo, the still 4 to 6 stay ashore for weeks. And then the new job started on Tuesday. An exciting day. A warm welcome to a great team. My new desk. And then surprised me Wilfried and Astrid Erdmann, who had come to Hamburg especially, to give me a few good wishes on my first day. Also a signed copy of Wilfried's new book and a gift for our Theo. I now read a chapter to the little one every eveningWhy we keep sailing vor. And he listens intently.

Life is pretty good on the Kat in the port of Hamburg. On the very first morning I sat a little in awe with a hot coffee in the salon and looked through the sliding glass door at the Elbphilharmonie, which is directly behind our cockpit. Toll. It's not that cold at the moment and it's usually enough, when I run one of the two new Eberspächer heaters on the lowest level. Then just use it up 100 ml per hour. But we are curious how it will be, when the freezing cold and snow are sweeping across the deck outside and both heaters have to run at full steam.

Some blog readers have already noted it ... and of course we have been thinking about it for a while, what we should do with our blog domain. Just like ten years agoallein-auf-see.de” was no longer up to date, is now also "zu-zweit-auf-see.de” obsolete. Some sailor has unfortunately, unfortunately already the website "zu-dritt-auf-see.de” hijacked. Too bad. „zu-viert-auf-see.de” would go too far...

Who is on a long journey, actually always gets a nickname as a crew from the other sailors, linked to the boat name. At that time, for example, the “Majas” and the “Riocajas” were traveling with us in the Caribbean, in the Bahamas the "Balus" and the "Worldis". We were always the Mavericks. So we thought so: That's a name, who is in the last 14 has been a constant throughout my years of long-distance sailing. We would have preferred to stay with a German domain, about www.die-mavericks.de. But since we have many American friends, who follow us via translator, would be "die" in English („die mavericks“ = „sterbt, Mavericks!“) sound a little strange... 😉 And we're at www.the-mavericks.de landed. We hope, that you all get used to it and that the name is easy to remember.

So far from us. As liveaboards, we plan to post more often again and report on life on board.

John, Cati and Theo
